Your child’s senior year is a milestone worth celebrating, and their senior portraits should reflect this special time in a way that feels personal and memorable. But before you book a photographer, it’s important to make sure you’re choosing the right one—someone who not only takes beautiful photos but also provides a smooth, stress-free experience.
From knowing what to expect before the session to understanding pricing and photo delivery, asking the right questions can help you avoid surprises and ensure your expectations are met.
That’s why I’ve put together five essential questions every parent should ask a senior photographer before making a decision. These questions will help you feel confident that you’re choosing a professional who offers the right level of guidance, delivers quality images on time, and provides the products you want without hidden costs.
There is no shortage of business and pricing models with it comes to photography. These 5 quick and easy questions will make you the confidence you need to make a very important decision since after all, this is a time you can't go back and repeat.
Let’s dive in!
How do you help me prepare for the session?
Does your photographer provide any resources that help with deciding on locations for your shoot, wardrobe or makeup and other prep tips? Do they offer an in person pre-session consultation to go over details like this? These resources can help you have a stress free session.
How long will it take to see and then receive the photos?
Ask about turnaround times for receiving proofs or seeing the final images. Some photographers offer IPS sessions (In Person Sales) where they go over the final images with you and help you make your purchase all in the same day. Other photographers will only deliver proofs via an online gallery. Additionally, ask when you'll receive the final print products if they offer production collections.
Do you offer digital AND print options?
Ask if you can purchase digital files, prints or printed products like albums or wall art. If your photographer only offers digitals, you'll be on your own to navigate the printing options, product layouts and material options. This can be overwhelming. If products are important to you, pick a photographer who offers both digital and products.
How many images can we expect to see?
Understanding the number of final images that you'll see and receive helps in setting your expectations so there aren't any disappointments. If your photographer does IPS, ask how many you'll see during your appointment. If they only deliver proofs, ask how many you can expect to see. Lastly, understanding how many images you'll receive when make your purchase of either digitals or products is very important.
Are there additional fees or costs?
Hiring a professional senior photographer is an investment and the last thing you want is an unexpected, hidden cost. Make sure you understand the senior photographer's pricing structure. Are there travel fees, extra add on collections, extra cost for additional outfits?
